the Clyde [the Clyde]
a river in south-west Scotland, flowing through ↑Glasgow and into the ↑Irish Sea. It is 106 miles/170 kilometres long. There were once shipyards (= places where ships are built) along its banks but this industry has now almost disappeared in Britain.
